Kobudo is the common term used to describe the classical weapon
arts of Okinawa and Japan. Often the terms "Kobudo" and "Kobujutsu" are
used interchangeably to describe traditional weapons practice.
We use a mix of both armed and unarmed skills to further prepare
the student. Understnading how these weapons were used leads
to a deeper understanding of range, movement and disarming. And
it's fun!
Our kobudo system was matched with the empty-hand
art to create the RHKK organization by the late Daisensei Seikichi
Odo. His addition of this lineage helped to create a full system
of combat. Some of the weaponry we train with includes the Bo,
Sai, Tunfa, and Nunchaku, among others.
It is recommended that students train in both the armed and
unarmed classes if possible. Many of the principles
from one class, relate directly to the other.
Kobudo training and rank may be pursued indepedently
or in unison with kenpo.
There are a
few items which will be mandatory at some point in your practice.
All weapons and safety equipment will be reviewed before use.
Head protection: We use hockey helmets with a full face shield,
not a cage.
Hand protection: Again, hockey gloves are a favorite.
It is also recommended that students bring some lighter protection
such as leather work gloves or mechanics gloves.
Weapons: This list will grow in time with the student. The items
will be covered as needed in class.
Groin protection: Though we usually do not wear them
during weapons classes, a cup is never a bad idea.
Note: Weapon classes are normally held outdoors. Dress accordingly.
There is a lot of movement,
impact and even some throwing involved. If you require any additional
equipment due to injury or otherwise, bring it. |
