We
practice a classical martial art known as Okinawan Kenpo
which roughly means "way of the fist ". Our school
traces it's lineage directly to Okinawa through the late Daisensei
Seikichi Odo. We are a member of the Shiho Bugei Kai, and
as such, an affiliate of the Ryukyu Hon Kenpo Kobujutsu Federation,
an international governing body for the practice of Ryukyu Hon
Kenpo and Kobujutsu. For more detailed information about these
organizations, see our links page.
Our style incorporates the use of a variety of combat
elements including striking, takedowns, joint manipulation,
and more. This allows students to train effective, failure-tolerant,
defenses against a variety of situations.
If you decide to train with
us there are a few items that you will need.
A Gi: After some time training, you will want to have
an appropriate uniform. We can help you find a suitable Gi for
training.
Safety gear: In a typical class there is a
fair amount of contact. It is important that everyone has sparring
gloves and a mouth guard at the very least. Other items that
are recommended are head gear, torso sparring gear, forearm/elbow
pads and lower leg protection. Again, we can help you find the
appropriate gear as it is needed.
Groin protection: A cup will be mandatory.
NOTE: No equipment is required to try the class.
There is a lot of movement,
impact and throwing or falling involved as you progress. If
you require any additional equipment due to injury or otherwise,
bring it.
